Award winning artist, Sarah Stifler Lucas, grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1970. She has maintained her studio in Connecticut since 1973, living currently in Stonington.
Well known for her masterfully articulated, provocative interpretations of life, Sarah has been recognized by art collectors nationwide and abroad for her versatile talents and soft, subtle tones which characterize her canvases. Sarah works in oil; her style combines the representational with the abstract.
Besides her figure paintings, café and street scenes, and delicate renditions of children at play, she specializes in commissioned portraits, many of which hang in both public and private collections throughout the United States and abroad. They include Justice Angelo Santiello, New London Superior Court House; Oakes Ames, President, Connecticut College; Captain George Street, U.S. Submarine base, Groton; Justice Joseph Longo and Justice Sabino Tamborra, Norwich Superior Courthouse; Mashantucket Tribal Chairman, Richard Hayward; City Council President, John Ryan, Norwich City Hall; Multi-Denominational Mural, Chapel, John F. Kennedy Aircraft Carrier; Norwich Cityscape Diptych, Norwich Savings Society; and Sidney Frank, Visual Arts Center, Norwich Free Academy.
Sarah's paintings have been included in many juried and invitational exhibitions. Among her many honors are awards from Allied Artists of America; National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society; Salmagundi Club, NY; New Haven Paint and Clay Club; and Mystic Museum of Art. She is represented by Sheldon Fine Arts, Newport, RI; Susan Powell Fine Art, Madison, CT; Finer Line Gallery, Mystic, CT; and Hughes Gallery, Boca Grande, FL. She is an Elected Artist Member of the following organizations where her work can also be seen: Salmagundi Club, NY; Lyme Art Association, Old Lyme, CT; Essex Art Association, Essex, CT; and Mystic Museum of Art, Mystic, CT, where she has taught painting classes since 1988.
